Why most silt fence fails

The fabric is rarely the problem. Failures come from installation — fence stapled to stakes and laid on the surface instead of trenched in, so the first real storm undercuts it and the sediment walks straight underneath. An inspector spots that immediately.

We cut a trench, set the fabric into it with the toe buried and backfilled, compact it, and space posts to the plan spec rather than to whatever’s convenient. On a permitted site that’s the difference between passing first time and holding up your schedule.

What's included

What you’re actually paying for, itemised.

Installed to plan spec

Post spacing, fabric type and trench depth taken from your approved erosion control plan, not from habit.

Inlet & outlet protection

Drop inlet protection, outlet stabilisation and check dams where the plan calls for them.

Maintenance through the build

Storm damage repaired and accumulated sediment removed so the run keeps working to close-out.

Removal and disposal

Pulled, hauled and disposed of at project close, with permanent seeding going in behind it.

How a silt fence job runs

Start to finish, in the order it happens.

  1. 01

    Plan review

We read your approved erosion control plan and price the run from it — linear feet, fabric spec, inlet protection, and any check dams.

  2. 02

    Layout

Marked on the ground along the limits of disturbance, following contours rather than cutting across them so water slows instead of concentrating.

  3. 03

    Trench and set

Trench cut, fabric toed in and backfilled, posts driven to spec depth, fabric fastened on the upslope face.

  4. 04

    Maintenance

We come back after significant storms, repair damage and remove accumulated sediment so the run stays compliant.

  5. 05

    Removal and seed

Pulled and disposed of at close-out, with permanent vegetative cover hydroseeded behind it — usually the same visit.

Questions

Yes — that’s most of this work. Send the plan and we price from it: linear feet, fabric spec, post spacing, inlet protection and check dams. We provide documentation for inspection.

Surface-laid fabric gets undercut by the first heavy rain and the sediment passes underneath. Toeing the fabric into a trench and backfilling is what makes it actually function, and it’s what the spec calls for.

Yes, on request. We return after significant storms, repair damage and remove accumulated sediment. Unmaintained fence is a common source of violations.

Yes, including disposal. We usually combine removal with the permanent seeding that’s required at close-out, which saves a mobilisation.

Usually within a few days. If ground is bare and a storm is coming, say so when you call — sites at genuine risk of sediment loss come ahead of routine lawn work. (919) 884-9772.
